The CT Mask is a medical device used by patients sensitive to breathing cold air. Inside each mask is a very efficient, patented thermal exchange module which affects a heat exchange cycle by regulating air flow through its chambers and directing the air over a low turbulence thermal medium. Heat and moisture from each exhaled breath is captured within the module and transferred into the next inhaled breath of fresh air, setting up a cycle of breathing warm, moist air.
During the cold months of the year, people with certain cardiovascular and pulmonary illnesses often experience noticeable discomfort when they must breathe the cold air while going about their daily outdoor activities. The CT Mask gives the user the ability to breathe warm, moist air in a cold environment and blunts the cold air induced stress on the cardio-pulmonary system.
For many patients with COPD, inhaling cold air causes bronchospasm and increases breathlessness. Patients are advised by healthcare providers that if they do go out, to wrap up with a coat, hat, and gloves, and to wear a cover over their mouth to reduce the effect of cold air being inhaled.
Several studies have reported that the use of a heat and moisture exchange mask (CT Mask) in patients with cold air induced asthma was very effective in preventing the reductions in FEV-1 that resulted from heat and moisture loss.
Laboratory tests have demonstrated that increases in blood pressure caused by cold exposure can be attenuated with the use of the CT Mask. (Data is available upon request.)
